The sprawling area of Maheshtala - Santoshpur - Metiaburz, which lies on the southern bank of the river Ganges, is famous for its unique garments industry throughout the state of West Bengal and beyond. This vast and densely populated area is largely inhabited by the people of tailoring or Dorji community. Despite its rich and potentially developed socio-economic conditions, this area was deprived of an institution of higher education and learning. With the passage of time, this deprivation acted as the catalyst for the demand for a College in this predominantly minority inhabited locality.
The first step in the direction to fulfil this aspiration of the local people was taken with the establishment of the Panchur Education Society in June 2003 with the coming together of the enthusiastic business stalwarts of Bengal Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Traders Welfare Association, the local small-time tailoring entrepreneurs, respected academicians and social workers of the locality. Local "Power Club" played the most crucial role in the whole endeavour, when they graciously agreed to handover their land meant for a playground, to the Panchur Education Society to establish a College.
There were hiccups and there were ups and downs, but the gritty and collective determination of all these people borne fruit in the shape of a massive four-storied marble-finished building meant for Panchur College. The college was inaugurated on 30th August, 2008 by Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, in the presence of Dr Suranjan Das, Honourable Vice-Chancellor, University of Calcutta. Quite frankly, the establishment of the College was a dream come true for the local people and it became a landmark in the history of Panchur for imparting higher education.
The College was established and nurtured in its initial years through the indomitable commitment, zeal and determination of a few extraordinary individuals and the accumulated donations of hundreds of people. The College was established in a very crucial and significant juncture in history-the first decade of the new millennium. Being well aware of this significance, the college tries to provide a mix of tradition and modernity as well as discipline and freedom, which is essential for the all round development of its students. The college tries to provide the space where students from various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds find the necessary freedom and stimulus to discover and nurture their individual talents, while learning to work in a group.
Finally, the college authorities are acutely aware of the fact that it has to instil and inculcate a sense of all round discipline, if it has to grow and aspire for higher glories. The College is committed to make no compromise in this regard. Based upon these principles, the College is looking to further enhance the quality and scope of its educational initiatives and to increase and improve its infrastructural facilities. the college tries to provide a clean, refreshing and intellectually stimulating environment, in which young adults from diverse backgrounds may interact and develop into well-informed, socially-aware, mature and responsible citizens of a vibrant republic.
